 What's New with Becky?
       by scrapNgal

Our font expert, Brian Tippetts, sat down for a little one-on-one with popular scrapbooker, blogger and book author, Becky Higgins. Get the inside scoop on what's new with this ultra-talented lady!

And don't forget to visit Becky's blog and website at www.beckyhiggins.com

Brian: When did you first get interested in creative lettering?
Becky: I can’t even say I remember a beginning to my interest in creative lettering, because it seemed to always “be there” for me. My earliest memories of doodling and lettering are from probably around age 10-12 when I would pass notes in school and church. And for sure these notes were adorned with the doodling and lettering we’re talking about.

Brian: What was the idea behind your first book, The Art of Creative Lettering and what are you most proud of with it?
Becky: I had a knack for lettering and the creative juices were just flowing for me, specifically with lettering, at that time in my life. I had recently been hired on as the new Creative Editor for Creating Keepsakes magazine and regularly published articles in their Creative Lettering column. It seemed natural (for both CK - my publisher & employer - and for me) to do a book. So we did!

“Proud” is a strong word, but I guess what I’m most proud of is the fact that I was only 22 years old when I did that book. There’s not only a lot of creativity on the artistic side of things, but a lot of organizational skill that goes into managing a project like that.

Brian: Do you have any influences for your own lettering style?
Becky: Not really. I just do what feels natural for my everyday handwriting. I don’t “try” to make it look like anything but what it is. And the only time I do “creative” lettering anymore is when I doodle for my kids in church so they have some coloring to keep reverent. : )

Brian: Do you have a favorite font?
Becky: That’s impossible -- to choose just one! No, seriously. It’s impossible. I can’t do it.

Brian: What style of fonts do you like recently?
Becky: Really classic serif fonts. Sounds boring, but there is so much swirling around me every day, creatively speaking, that I appreciate the simplicity of a clean and classic font.

Brian: Do you have any fonts that you love to mix and match together?
Becky: Rockwell and CK Becky (that’s my own script-style handwriting that compliments other solid and simple fonts really well).

Brian: What do you find most fulfilling or that you are most passionate about in your life?
Becky: Hands-down, my family is my greatest love and passion and where I find the greatest joy. Outside of my loved ones, I have always had a passion for homemaking, for creating, and for sharing. That’s the main reason I blog. To share ideas on a variety of topics, hoping that something benefits someone else once in a while. (www.beckyhiggins.com/blog)

Brian: Tell me more about Project Life? What is the concept behind it and how will it make my life easier?
Becky: Project Life is an approach to scrapbooking ... but without the aspects of scrapbooking that are overwhelming to so many. There is no figuring out what goes where, or adhering this to that, or choosing which embellishments to use, or spending time designing pages. The end result is a beautiful scrapbook but the process is completely simplified in the most wonderful way. All you need to do is add your pictures and a little bit of journaling. It’s that simple. More information can be found on www.beckyhiggins.com

Brian: Without getting too personal, any updates with the family? Pets? Kids activities? New hobbies?
Becky: David and I have 3 young children whom we adore ... and we recently caved in and added 2 fish. That’s about as far as we’re willing to go when it comes to pets for now. I continue to enjoy photography and organization, etc. Lately I’ve been even more interested & involved in home interiors and creating floral arrangements.

Brian: Anything that we can look forward to seeing from you in the near future?
Becky: I am working on a school kit (that will be as simple to use as Project Life) as well as the Project Life 2011 version. These are both expected to arrive Fall 2010. In the meantime, my blog is always my home base for all of my idea-sharing. Come on over and check it out.

NOTE: The entire month of May has been dedicated to my Big Photography Giveaway, where I feature about 5 photographers every single day and they’re all giving away a photo shoot. Super fun giveaway and fantastic photographic inspiration! Now that it’s June, I’m back to my regular blogging again.
